During the climate summit in Copenhagen in December 2009 around 2,000 people were arrested without having committed any criminal offence. Of this number, approximately 20 were detained for up to a month, and four of these people are facing trials this autumn, starting on 24th August. The police actions during the summit, and these trials, are completely out of proportion and a clear violation of the democratic right to protest.
Climate justice activists around the world are organising solidarity demonstrations to demand that the charges against the activists are immediately dropped, and to show that the growing climate justice movement for “system change, not climate change” will not be silenced.
35 activists from Climate Justice Action Belgium, and the Ecotopia Climate Justice Bike Tour held a solidarity demonstration today in front of the Danish Embassy in Brussels. A letter with the demands of the group was handed to a member of the embassy staff.
